Selection Criteria For International Ecommerce Platforms

Here’s a short summary of the main selection and evaluation criteria I used to develop my list of the best international ecommerce platforms for this article:

Core Functionality

During your search, you’ll find that the international ecommerce platform you evaluate will have its own set of features compared to other options on the market, but each will have specific foundational functionality that makes it a global ecommerce solution. No matter what features, capabilities, or solutions the software offers, each platform will provide the following core functionality to your business.

  • Multi-currency support; enables businesses to conduct transactions in various currencies, allowing customers from different countries to browse and make purchases using their local currency.
  • Global shipping and logistics; provide tools to manage international shipping and logistics efficiently. They help businesses calculate shipping costs for different regions, offer various shipping options, and handle customs and import/export regulations to ensure smooth delivery of products to customers worldwide.

Key Features

There are countless features offered by international ecommerce platforms, which can be overwhelming for those getting started in their ecommerce journey. To help, I added solutions that provide the following features.

  • Payment Processing: International ecommerce platforms allow customers to choose their preferred payment method, such as credit card or digital wallet.
  • Security: There are some factors to consider regarding ecommerce security, and international ecommerce platforms support many of them, including firewalls, SSL certificates, and more.
  • Customization Options: Highly customizable international ecommerce platforms enable businesses to develop unique online stores that reflect their brand and meet specific customer needs.
  • International Shipping: To operate a genuinely international ecommerce store, comprehensive platforms will support worldwide shopping to help improve your customer's experiences with your brand.
  • Analytics: This feature makes it easy for you to monitor your online store’s metrics that are essential to your business, such as churn rate, customer lifetime value, sales conversions, and average order value.
  • Customer Support: Even the easiest international ecommerce platform will require some kind of support from the vendor, so I added many options that provide accessible and fast support through different options, such as live chat, email, phone, or self-help tools.

Usability

Not everybody is a developer, so I made sure to choose beginner-friendly platforms based on current user reviews. If your team doesn’t have strong technical skills, I added many options that are straightforward to use and require very little training to get up and running. As we know, managing an online store can be challenging, so I also added solutions that make operation processes seamless and intuitive.

Software Integrations

Integrating your international ecommerce platform with other third-party applications or business systems is essential. Without integrating with tools, your business will be siloed and unable to use the benefits of connecting to other systems, such as connecting with multiple systems and sharing data, automating tasks and processes, and connecting to new markets and customers. For example, any ecommerce platform will need to connect to an inventory management software and order management system in order to sell your goods; a product information management software (PIM) in order to run your catalog; and payment process tools, like shopping cart solutions and ecommerce accounting software.

International Focus

Those operating an international ecommerce business will need options that can handle the unique aspects of selling worldwide. For example, I look for global ecommerce platforms that support multiple currencies within their payment processing capabilities, support worldwide shipping tax calculations, and automate translation processes to eliminate language barriers. Lastly, I consider international ecommerce platforms that support security measures such as adherence to privacy regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

People Also Ask

When searching for new international ecommerce platforms to implement in your organization, you might have some questions that need answering first to help you make the best decision for your business. To help, I answered other individuals’ most commonly asked questions when searching for these tools.

How much does international ecommerce platforms cost?

The price of an international ecommerce platform can vary depending on the features your business needs. Simple tools with basic capabilities can cost as low as $10/month, whereas more complex solutions with advanced functionality can cost much more. During my research, the average cost tended to be between $29/month and $299/month.

Which 3 countries spend the most on ecommerce?

International ecommerce sales are expected to grow to over $8.148 trillion by 2026, so it’s worth understanding where the most significant opportunities are. Naturally, you’ll want to identify the top ecommerce markets in order to understand how to scale worldwide. Firstly, I’ll start with China because the country experiences annual online sales of $672 billion due to having the largest digital buyer population. Secondly, U.S. ecommerce sales reached $343.15 billion in 2019 and are expected to hit $476.5 billion in 2024. And thirdly, the U.K. sees annual online sales of $99 billion, but if you’re going to target this market, you can expect new complications due to the VAT changes after Brexit – so be sure to plan accordingly.

What are the benefits of international ecommerce platforms?

International ecommerce platforms are instrumental in enabling businesses to expand their reach and operate on a global scale. The following are additional benefits of international ecommerce platforms and how they significantly expand business opportunities, revenue streams, and global brand presence in today’s interconnected world.

  • Global Market Access: International ecommerce platforms provide access to a potential market of 7.9 billion people worldwide.
  • Diverse Customer Base: Reach a diverse audience, with cross-border ecommerce projected to account for 22% of global ecommerce.
  • Increased Revenue: Expanding internationally can lead to significant revenue growth for ecommerce businesses.
  • Brand Globalization: International ecommerce platforms can help businesses establish a global brand presence, with many consumers stating they purchase products from overseas retailers.
  • Localized Customer Experience: Tailor offerings to local preferences to accommodate consumers who prefer to buy products from a site that provides information in their language.
  • Currency Adaptability: Accepting multiple currencies can increase an ecommerce store’s checkout completion rates.
  • Global Shipping: Offering international shipping options can influence global online shoppers’ purchasing decisions.
  • Market Diversification: Diversifying your market presence can reduce the impact of economic downturns in specific regions, reducing risk.
  • Competitive Advantage: Implementing international ecommerce platforms in a business can make it more competitive in its industry.
  • Data-Driven Expansion: Leveraging the statistics from international ecommerce solutions can help businesses identify high-potential international markets and refine global strategies.
